New York Knicks Stay Ahead of Miami Heat in Free Agency Race

Reports are saying that the New York Knicks are pulling ahead of NBA Champions Miami Heat in the race to sign free agent Marcus Camby...
Camby, the former New York Knick, is looking for a salary of at least $3 million. This knocks the Heat out of the running unless they can secure a sign and trade deal with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets, who still have the rights to Camby, are not interested in a deal with Miami, but have expressed interest with a similar deal with the Knicks.

The Knicks would be using either a sign and trade deal or a mid level exception to sign Camby, with the other likely being used on newly acquired Jason Kidd.

Miami Heat executive Pat Riley was the brains behind the Big 3 in Miami Heat that led to a Championship. Recently, he convinced Ray Allen to take less money to accept a deal with the Heat. The Heat only have about $1.4 million, as the veteran minimum, to offer to Camby. Can Riley convince Camby to come to Miami with a shot at a repeat Championship?

Marcus Camby was scheduled to meet with the Heat on Saturday and the Knicks on Sunday. Wednesday marks the official start of free agency, but Camby may make a decision and announcement prior to that day.
